7 Crucial Face Washing Tips + 15 Best Facial Cleansers for All Skin Types

face washing tips

There’s never a bad time for talking about face washing tips, about how to properly cleanse your face every day.

Actually,

During these times, I think that the subject of proper face washing is even more important than ever. That turned out to be the case for me and maybe for you, too.

What do I mean by these times?

Well,

My adult acne has gotten out of control with all this mask wearing. People have started calling it maskne, an increase in breakouts caused by mask wearing.

It seems that maskne is more likely to affect people with dry sensitive skin (yay, me!) and those who wear masks for very long periods of time.

I’m not sure about the term but let’s go with it.

I feel like I don’t need a new term to describe a condition that has gotten worse, I just need everything to get back to normal.

The truth is that I wear 2 masks, one on top of the other, when I enter closed spaces. Couple that with the summer heat and sweating under the masks and my acne is out of control, especially when it comes to my chin and jaw.

My cheekbones haven’t been left alone either.

Mix the above conditions with all the stress that has plagued my mind this year, and it turns into a vicious cycle that’s making me crazy.

Before this pandemic, I was actually controlling my breakouts. They weren’t gone completely but I was only bothered before menstruation for about a week.

Before this, I was actually more concerned with wrinkles than anything else.

It seems that, once again, I have to focus on taking better care of my face in all aspects not only in the anti-aging department.

What better way of tackling my increased breakouts than talking about face washing tips, going back to basics?

I have to state right from the beginning that face washing, cleansing your face twice daily, is the most important step of any beauty routine.

Besides wearing sunscreen daily all year round.

Or a moisturizer with SPF, that works too, and moisturizers with SPF are some of my favorite skin care products.

These two things are the foundation: cleansing your face twice daily whether you suffer from breakouts or not and applying sunscreen every day of the year.

How Often Should You Wash Your Face?

I cleanse my face every morning and every evening.

I also cleanse my face both before and after exercising – a few months ago, I switched from yoga to Tabata, I needed to push my body in order to calm my mind, that was a great discovery, a very nice recommendation from YouTube.

And I cleanse my face before and after epilating my face to prevent breakouts on my upper lip. It can happen when you use an epilator or when you wax.

Additionally,

Since I started wearing a mask whenever I’m in crowded spaces outside or 2 masks when I’m entering closed spaces, I cleanse my face before and after wearing a mask.

I also take a shower as soon as I’m inside my house.

That’s a lot of face washing, I’ll give you that.

It has also increased the number of times I have to reapply moisturizer and acne products.

Which adds up to even more money spent, on top of all the new breakouts. As if things weren’t hard enough.

Still,

As long as these remain my only problems, I will be completely thankful that’s all there is.

Why Is Face Washing so Crucial?

For now,

Forget about the best serums or the best anti-wrinkles treatments and let’s talk about the fundamentals: face washing as it should be done.

We need to maintain and strengthen our skin’s barrier to combat irritation, the risk of breakouts, and even aging.

We need to remind ourselves about the most important face washing tips.

Face washing has all the wonderful benefits that you could hope for:

  • removes dirt, oil, and dead skin cells
  • unclogs our pores
  • allows skin care products to easily penetrate the skin, increasing their effectiveness

Face Washing Tips: The 7 Most Important Steps to Follow

Cleansing your face can be very simple if you just pay attention to these simple but very important face washing tips.

I hope my article will make everything easy for you.

Face Washing Tip 1: Cleanse your Face Twice Daily

That is the minimum that we should wash our face: every morning and every evening.

I would also recommend cleansing your face before wearing a mask and as as soon as you stop wearing a mask. As soon as you can, anyway.

It will increase the number of times you absolutely have to wash your face.

Which is why, you must choose a best facial cleanser that won’t dry out your face because that will only make your skin to produce more oil, which leads to more breakouts and blackheads and whiteheads.

Applying a mild chemical exfoliator, after cleansing in the evening is even better.

Face Washing Tip 2: Wash your Hands First

It sounds logical, doesn’t it?

You can’t rush straight to pumping/squeezing out your cleanser.

You need clean hands first, that won’t bring additional dirt to your face and pushing it in while you massage the face wash in.

We’ve already become completely accustomed to having clean hands and how to wash them thoroughly so, I really don’t need to tell you how to wash your hands.

Are your hands clean?

Great! Let’s move on to other face washing tips.

Face Washing Tip 3: Remove your Makeup Before Cleansing

I don’t actually wear makeup because I’m just too lazy for one more obsession.

If you wear makeup, remove it before cleansing.

Micellar water is great for that.

Cleansing oils are another fantastic choice.

They will remove even waterproof makeup without irritating or reddening the skin.

This is called double cleansing.

Face Washing Tip 4: Use Lukewarm Water

Cold water isn’t good because it won’t remove all the dirt, oil, and dead skin cells that need to be removed.

Hot water can easily dry out the skin and irritate it, which is why it’s not recommended to wash your face in the shower.

Lukewarm water is the middle and the ideal. It will feel just a bit warmer than your body temperature.

Lukewarm water will allow your face wash to form foam and get to work without disturbing your skin’s barrier.

Face Washing Tip 5: Wash your Face for an Entire Minute

I was actually doing that before it became a whole trend and a major face washing tip that everyone was talking about.

I am just obsessed that way and I’m definitely not bragging.

It just seems logical that you should enjoy cleansing your face, that you should take your time and actually pamper your skin with that amazing foam that you rub into your skin while, at the same time, providing a massage in circular motions to all areas of your face.

That’s all you need to focus on, don’t count the seconds, just enjoy this time and relax your face.

Don’t scrub aggressively, your face appreciates gentle circular motions that work the face wash into the skin.

Extend the attention to your neck area, too.

Face Washing Tip 6: Pat Dry with a Clean Towel

Don’t rub your towel all over your face.

You don’t need to exfoliate your face with a towel, there are plenty of very good facial exfoliators for that.

Just pat it dry.

Obviously, it needs to be a clean towel just like you needed clean hands to start your cleansing.

If, after washing your face, you need to apply a retinol or a chemical exfoliator, the skin must be completely dry to avoid any irritation. Absolutely dry.

If not, the moisture left will be sealed in with the next products that you’re going to apply.

In the mornings, after a toner, I immediately apply a vitamin C serum.

Face Washing Tip 7: Apply your Skincare Products Immediately After

This is actually the last of my face washing tips.

Don’t leave your face bare for more than a minute after washing because the dry air will be pulling moisture out of your skin.

Your skincare products will more easily penetrate the skin since the pores are open after your washing with lukewarm water.

And,

That’s it.

We’re done with the face washing tips and even though I wrote quite a bit about them, they’re actually very simple and easy-to-follow:

  • cleanse your face at least twice a day, mornings and evenings (before and after mask wearing, too)
  • wash your hands first
  • remove makeup with micellar water or a cleansing oil before cleansing
  • use lukewarm water
  • cleanse for a minute with gentle circular motions
  • pat dry with a clean towel, don’t rub your face
  • in the next minute after washing, apply your skin care products

Additional steps include exfoliating regularly and using a mask at least once a week but those are completely separate subjects.

15 Best Facial Cleansers for Every Skin Type and Budget

Since we’ve gone through the most important face washing tips and a big part of it is represented by using the best facial cleansers, I thought it would be a good idea to recommend you some.

I selected a variety of facial cleansers because everyone’s needs are different.

Everyone’s budget is quite different, too.

With these two criteria set in mind, I wanted to offer you an introduction to the world of the best facial cleansers that respond to a wide array of needs and concerns.

Once you couple those face washing tips with a great facial cleanser, things should get much better and you will have a better idea of what your beauty routine should be like.

1. CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser, 16 oz – Cheapest Best Facial Cleanser for Normal to Dry Skin

Click On Photo to Learn More

There are a lot of CeraVe facial cleansers on the market. I should just make a post on all of them, just to have them gathered in one place because I lose sight of how many there are.

I have been a fan of the CeraVe facial cleansers for many years and I always come back to them.

You simply cannot beat that quantity, quality and price.

That’s simply not something that you can say no to. And I just had to have it firstly mentioned in my post on face washing tips.

There are more expensive best facial cleansers and I’ll talk about those, too a bit later.

However,

Since I’ve needed to increase the number of times I’m washing my face, I use those less often to make them last longer.

CeraVe is always such a perfect choice for everyone.

While reading hundreds of articles on skin care, I’ve encountered many dermatologists mentioning different CeraVe products.

I’ve also included their vitamin C serum as my first recommendation in my post on the best vitamin C serums. Check it out, if you feel like reading on one of the best ways to protect your skin and nourish it, at the same time.

I chose to talk about the CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser, which is for normal to dry skin.

It’s the category where a lot of people fall into.

They also have two cleansers for normal to oily skin that are just as popular – the excess oil will be removed without harming the essential oils and the skin barrier is strengthened.

It’s also hydrating but you should still apply a serum or moisturizer after.

It won’t dry out the skin even with washing your face more than twice daily.

The ingredients are simple and they target the strengthening of the skin’s barrier thanks to those 3 essential ceramides and the hyaluronic acid is the one in charge of trapping moisture into the skin, preventing the skin from getting dry.

The 16 oz will last a very long time, up to 6 months at least. That’s about how long mine lasts although I haven’t really paid attention to the time frame.

That’s a complete bargain, pure and simple.

If I alternate between using 2 or 3 cleansers, I lose track of how long each lasts.

2. CeraVe Acne Foaming Cream Cleanser, 5 oz – Best Facial Cleanser for Acne

Click On Photo to Learn More

This CeraVe Acne Foaming Cream Cleanser is quite different than the above one.

It comes in a smaller quantity, only 5 oz. Which also makes it considerably more expensive.

But,

That’s not what’s different.

The main difference is made by the 4% benzoyl peroxide that this one contains.

In my opinion, the 4% strength is high enough, you don’t need a 10% strength for it to be effective, that’s just too much.

Benzoyl peroxide is great for treating acne, especially mild to moderate forms.

Benzoyl peroxide kills the bacteria underneath the skin, while removing excess skin (dead skin cells) and excess sebum.

The side-effects are: dryness, itchiness, redness, excessive peeling, and general irritation.

It doesn’t work that well for blackheads and whiteheads, salicylic acid is more effective for those. Azelaic acid is good, too.

You should give it a try before trying out other avenues, like retinoids. Those can be harsher, except Differin Gel.

Getting back to the CeraVe Acne Foaming Cream Cleanser, there are a few other ingredients besides the 4% benzoyl peroxide:

  • 3 essential ceramides for strengthening the skin barrier
  • hyaluronic acid for smooth moisturized skin
  • niacinamide for the skin barrier and for smaller-looking pores

Now you see why I had to include yet another CeraVe cleanser but this time it’s a best facial cleanser for acne.

I know there’s also the Neutrogena Rapid Clear Stubborn Acne Face Wash but that has 10% benzoyl peroxide, which seems too much to me.

I think you should consult a dermatologist before using a cleanser with such a high percentage. It has the risk of being irritating and drying out the skin too much.

3. La Roche-Posay Effaclar Purifying Foaming Gel, 13.52 oz – Best Facial Cleanser for Oily Skin

Click On Photo to Learn More

This La Roche-Posay foaming gel is fantastic for oily and combination skin.

Its ability to prevent breakouts and to clear out oily skin of excessive oil is brought on by zinc PCA.

This is the ingredient to try if you have oily/combination skin.

The price is great, the quantity plentiful, and the quality is definitely one of the best.

Just keep in mind that it is not fragrance-free.

Another option is the La Roche-Posay Effaclar Medicated Gel Acne Face Wash, that ones’s very good, too.

4. First Aid Beauty Pure Skin Face Cleanser, 5 oz – Best Facial Cleanser for Sensitive Skin

First of all,

This is not a cheap best facial cleanser.

But it might be totally worth it.

The quantity is not big at all, it measures just 5 oz.

It will be gone in a couple of months.

It’s very good for sensitive skin because it’s sulfate-free and fragrance-free, which is perfect, but it’s also great for dry, normal or combination skin types (it’s oil-free).

They have an entire list of ingredients that they don’t have and it sounds great.

5. TULA Probiotic Purifying Face Cleanser, 6.7 oz – Best Facial Cleanser Overall

Click On Photo to Learn More

I find this best facial cleanser from TULA to be a dream come true and I’m definitely not the only one.

It’s a pleasure to talk about it in my face washing tips article.

It’s really popular even though the price is not exactly cheap but not too expensive, either. Right in the middle.

But,

When it comes to a cleansers like this one, you can be forgiven for splurging a bit.

The 6.7 oz quantity is not bad. It will last for at least 3-4 months, even when used heavily.

It’s perfect for all skin types.

It cleanses deeply while nourishing the skin and strengthening the skin’s barrier at the same time.

What I appreciate about the TULA Probiotic Purifying Face Cleanser is the complexity of the ingredients, their synergy:

  • their world-famous probiotics, they called them skin superfoods for healthy, balanced and glowing skin
  • lactic acid as a natural exfoliator for removing dead skin cells – the milder version of glycolic acid but just as effective
  • chicory root boosts collagen production for a smoother skin
  • turmeric root – a powerful antioxidant with anti-inflammatory capabilities
  • blueberries – rich in antioxidants
  • ascorbyl palmitate – a vitamin C derivative, another good antioxidant

This best facial cleanser removes dirt and oil, removes dead skin cells thanks to its incorporation of a mild AHA, promotes collagen production, and has a small army of antioxidants.

Those are reasons enough for me to consider it the best facial cleanser overall with a price tag that makes it accessible to many categories of people.

6. Eminence Age Corrective Monoi Exfoliating Cleanser, 8.4 oz

Click On Photo to Learn More

Well,

This is a nice surprise. Another best facial cleanser on the larger side.

The bigger size definitely make the price worth it.

It will last a long time.

It works best for normal, dry, and mature skin types. It’s not for everyone.

But it is for those who are looking for a best anti-aging cleanser that also exfoliates the skin, sloughing off dead skin cells, leaving the skin feeling smooth and having a youthful appearance.

It isn’t called Age Corrective Exfoliating Cleanser for nothing.

There are reasons for that, mainly the oh-so-many ingredients that promise delightful benefits.

Eminence is a brand that has the good tendency to combine a lot of natural ingredients in their products.

That’s what makes them so good and this exfoliating cleanser is not exception.

It’s a 2-in-1 product: a cleanser and a facial exfoliator.

It combines so many ingredients, I’m definitely not going to list all of them.

The stars are:

  • PhytoCellTec™ Swiss Green Apple Stem Cells that promote elasticity
  • monoi oil – has hydrating and protecting properties, delays signs of aging, and has healing and anti-inflammatory properties
  • the exfoliation is brought on by lactic acid (AHA) and a bunch of fruits with enzymes that gently exfoliate the skin: lemon, passion fruit, grape and pineapple extracts
  • BioComplex: a bunch of antioxidants, Coenzyme Q10, and alpha lipoic acid

How to use:

Dilute a pea-size amount with water in hands and massage into the skin for 1-3 minutes.

That’s their main selling point and it’s a very nice one.

It contains aloe vera, cucumber, green tea, and lavender oil.

The price is not bad, either.

8. iS CLINICAL Cleansing Complex, 6 oz

Click On Photo to Learn More

This one is a bit more expensive than the above ones.

At least the 6 oz quantity is pretty good. For the price, it could have been better.

It’s perfect for all skin types, great for men and women, alike and equally appreciated by both genders.

White Willow Bark is the ingredient that attracts the most attention.

It has great antibacterial properties (contains salicin, not to be confused with salicylic acid but they’re pretty similar in their actions), exfoliates and dissolves pore-clogging oil, and it also soothes irritated and acne-prone skin.

Chamomile and Centella Asiatica are the plants from which antioxidants are extracted for healing and soothing the skin.

It also contain sugar cane extract, glycolic acid (a powerful chemical exfoliator) is extracted from sugar cane.

I can’t find any fault with this best facial cleanser, except the pretty expensive price. It would definitely not be my first choice.

Click On Photo to Learn More

Now,

This is a gentle best facial cleanser.

It contains fragrance though so, be aware of that.

It’s targeted towards cleansing and exfoliating the face in a gentle manner.

Those with sensitive or acne-prone skin will definitely appreciate the gentleness of this cleanser.

And, the price is not high at all.

The focus is just on a few ingredients:

  • papaya fruit extract, which contains papain – an enzyme that offers mild exfoliation for naturally vibrant skin
  • salicylic acid
  • Bixa Orellana seed extract – high in antioxidants with soothing properties

10. Mario Badescu Enzyme Cleansing Gel, 8 oz

Click On Photo to Learn More

Speaking of enzymes but at a much more affordable price and a larger quantity than the above Revision Skincare Papaya Enzyme Cleanser, I thought of also recommending the Mario Badescu Enzyme Cleansing Gel.

It’s really affordable and the quantity is great for this price.

The focus is on two ingredients: papaya fruit extract and grapefruit fruit extract.

Those two extracts ensure that the skin is exfoliated and cleansed of anything that clogs up the pores.

Papaya breaks down dead skin cells.

Grapefruit rejuvenates skin with a brightening boost.

Not a bad combination at all.

It’s a gel cleanser but it’s used the same: apply on wet skin, massage into the skin for a minute, and rinse with lukewarm water.

It does not foam.

It’s oil-free. Good for all skin types.

It also contains fragrance, for those who absolutely don’t buy any skin care products that contains fragrance.

11. Image Skincare Ageless Total Facial Cleanser, 6 oz

Click On Photo to Learn More

If you are committed to an anti-aging beauty routine but you don’t want to spend an outrageous amount on an anti-aging best facial cleanser, this Image facial cleanser might be a good option to consider.

The 6 oz quantity is a pretty good one, enough to last you for a few months without worries.

I discovered Image Skincare through their vitamin C serum.

Since then, I’ve ended up including a product from them whenever they have something good that fits my posts.

They’re quite popular.

So,

What about the Image Skincare Ageless Total Facial Cleanser?

It contains glycolic acid that takes care of the exfoliation part, it removes dead skin cells.

Glycolic acid is a powerful chemical exfoliator, the most effective of AHAs because it’s the smallest and it easily penetrates the skin.

It also contains menthol so be aware of that, some might not like it. But it’s great at cooling the skin and calming acne-prone skin.

Other ingredients include green tea extract.

Works for all skin types, including those who are acne-prone.

This best facial cleanser is a bit pricey but it has some ingredients that make you stop and pay attention to it.

After all, the ELEMIS is a luxury British skincare & spa brand.

It’s another cleanser that also acts as a chemical exfoliator.

We saw quite a few of those above.

The question is:

What makes the ELEMIS Dynamic Resurfacing Facial Wash special?

As always, the answer is found in the list of ingredients.

This particular list of ingredients is intriguing in a very very good way:

  • patented tri-enzyme technology for exfoliation
  • galactoarabinan – this is not a word that one encounters often, even in the world of of millions of skincare products – it enhances the non-abrasive exfoliation process
  • babassu oil replenishes moisture
  • white truffle soothes and strengthens the skin’s barrier
  • moringa seed extract protects against environmental damage

It’s marketed towards people who want a renewed, revitalized complexion.

Click On Photo to Learn More

If you want to take the oriental route, this facial cleanser might be exactly what you’re looking for.

I am also pretty certain that it might be the most expensive best facial cleanser or, at least, one of the most expensive.

It definitely is the most expensive one that I’ve included in this post on face washing tips.

You will get a small quantity, 3.53 oz, for a very expensive price.

What is it about it that makes it worth it, as long as you have that kind of money to spend on skincare products?

Well,

I’m definitely not going to list every ingredient for the Koh Gen Do Oriental Plants Face Wash.

There are a lot of plants, fruits, roots, flowers extracts and even mushroom stem extract.

It’s an overwhelming list of ingredients.

It even has ascorbyl palmitate, which a vitamin C derivative, a good antioxidant.

Besides that, there are ceramides, green tea, aloe vera, vitamin E, and so much more.

What the Koh Gen Do puts emphasis on when describing their oriental plants face wash is:

  • this is a moisturizing cleanser thanks to what they call T3 oil: their signature blend of jojoba oil, olive squalene, and shea butter – those are definitely effective moisturizers
  • and it’s an anti-aging cleanser thanks to their 36 anti-aging botanicals – I told you it has a very long list of ingredients, I guess they have to justify that huge price with a multitude of ingredients that promise smooth youthful-looking skin

Plus, it’s for all skin types, especially for those who pursue a youthful appearance.

Click On Photo to Learn More

  • sunflower oil + ginger root oil
  • moringa tree extract
  • papaya extract
  • echinacea green envy

The Farmacy Green Clean Makeup Meltaway Cleansing Balm works for all skin types, even those with dry sensitive skin or who are acne-prone.

The much more affordable alternative for makeup removal is the Cetaphil Gentle Waterproof Makeup Remover.

15. Tatcha Pure One Step Camellia Cleansing Oil, 5.1 oz – Fantastic Makeup Remover and Cleanser

Click On Photo to Learn More

This is actually a 2-in-1 product.

It’s a makeup remover and cleanser.

If you use the Tatcha Pure One Step Camellia Cleansing Oil to remove makeup, you don’t a second cleanser, this product takes care of that, as well.

Even so,

It’s not cheap at all and it belongs to the category of tiny cleansers, you only get 5.1 oz of this cleansing oil.

The star of the show and the ingredient that might make convince you to buy this makeup remover and cleansing oil is the Japanese camellia oil

This oil that has been prized for centuries, contains vitamins A, B, D and E and nourishing Omegas 3, 6, and 9.

Even though it contains Japanese camellia oil, it still works for all skin types. But it’s mostly praised by those that have dry or mature skin.

Once you’ve massaged it into the skin, you rinse with lukewarm water.

It will wash away any makeup without leaving the smallest traces behind.

Face Steaming

To all those face washing tips,

You can add steaming your face to open up pores.

You can steam your face once a week and make that day a sort-of a spa-at-home day.

Steaming your face is completely optional, only do it if you like pampering yourself at home.

It’s a simple process:

  • cleanse your face before steaming
  • steam it for about 10 minutes
  • cleanse it again after steaming or exfoliate it gently
  • apply a mask (the Aztec Indian clay mask is fantastic or a moisturizing mask if you have really dry skin)
  • and apply your acne products/serum/moisturizer

The pores are opened up so, skin care products will have increase effectiveness, they will penetrate the skin more easily.

It’s a whole process.

You shouldn’t regard it as a chore but as something to really enjoy, a small window of simple pampering at home.

To sum it up,

By writing about face washing tips and by including some of the best facial cleansers, I wanted to show you that cleansing your face can be easy, affordable, and that you have absolutely no reason not to cleanse your face twice daily, it’s the absolute foundation for a healthy skin all day, every day.
