The subject of upper lip hair removal is a constant in many women’s lives.
We dread seeing those hairs.
There are plenty of upper lip hair removal methods to try and choose from.
1. Shaving: The Tinkle
Special facial razors for women are great because they are used directly on dry skin, they’re very fast, it only takes a few seconds on the upper lip, they don’t irritate the skin at all, there’s no risk of cuts, and no pain. The only thing is that the hairs grow back in 2-3 days.
2. Hair Removal Creams: Avon Skin so Soft Facial Hair Removal Cream
Using depilatory creams for upper lip hair removal is painless and quite fast. The hardest part is figuring out through trial and error how many minutes the cream should be left on the skin until it dissolve the hairs without irritating the skin.
3. Waxing: VidaSleek Hard Wax Kit
Using this microwavable hard wax for upper lip hair removal is great but if you’re not a big fan of hard wax that needs to be melted and needs to have a certain temperature, choose cold facial wax strips. The smooth skin will last for two weeks either way.
4. Epilation: Emjoi e18
The disadvantage that comes with using epilators for upper lip hair removal is getting used to the pain. It might be worth it because epilators are one of the most affordable hair removal tools that remove hairs from their follicles since you pay for them once and end up using them for years.
5. Tweezing: Tweezerman Mini Slant Tweezer
If you want an upper lip hair removal method that removes the hairs from the root but you’re afraid of trying waxing or epilation then you can use your pair of tweezers to remove the hairs. It will take a long time and the pain is quite bad
Some offer results for a very short period of time, others ensure peace of mind for a couple of weeks, while one is permanent (sweet words for any woman).
Although the focus of my post is on upper lip hair removal methods and some product recommendations in the case of some of these methods, almost all methods can be used to remove unwanted hairs from the entire face.
I think the hair removal cream that I’ve included should only be used on the face.
That’s the only exception from the entire array of methods.
I just want to make one thing clear before we go into all those methods:
According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information, based on an article published in the BMJ in 2007, it’s a myth that shaving causes hairs to grow back faster, darker, or more coarse.
By extension, I would say the same to be true about depilatory creams, waxing, threading, tweezing, and epilation.
If you are interested, here is an article on how to remove upper lip hair through natural methods.
Top 7 Best Upper Lip Hair Removal Methods and Products
The abridged version goes like this:
- there are two painless upper lip hair removal methods to choose from: shaving and hair removal creams – they are also the ones whose results only last for a few days
- there are more options to consider if you want a hairless upper lip for at least 2 weeks but you have to handle the pain: tweezing (it takes a while so it’s a bit tiresome), threading but you need to find a professional for that, waxing (hot wax or cold facial wax strips) which can be easily done at home, and using an epilator, which might be the most painful but very fast
- laser hair removal, which can leave you free of unwanted hairs for up to a couple of years
- and the permanent one: electrolysis
For some of these upper lip hair removal methods, I’ve also taken the liberty to recommend some products to get you started and to give you an idea of the cost.
1. Shaving: The Tinkle
If you prefer shaving as a method for getting rid of facial hair then this product may be great for you.
A really awesome razor is the Tinkle. An alternative is the Schick Facial Razor.
Both are amazing.
It’s the perfect razor if you want to remove facial hair.
It’s not advisable to use razors that you would normally use on your body.
When using the Tinkle, you don’t need to wet your face or use a shaving cream.
Just make those hairs go away on dry skin. The shape of the blade is perfect and the blade is not that sharp so there’s little risk of cutting yourself.
Whether you have peach fuzz or coarse hair, the Tinkle is going to handle them.
Don’t forget to moisturise after because shaving your face also implies a bit of exfoliation. Therefore, you don’t want to have dry skin.
It’s incredibly fast to shave your upper lip, there’s no faster method for upper lip hair removal. And no pain!
The biggest disadvantage is that you’re going to shave once every 3 days or so.
2. Hair Removal Creams: Avon Skin so Soft Facial Hair Removal Cream, 1 oz
Before actually talking a little about this cream, I would like to remind you that first you should do the 48 hour test to see if there are any adverse reactions, like burns.
Make sure to read and follow the instructions.
Everything is very easy when using hair removal creams for upper lip hair removal and there’s no pain.
It’s a great option for those who prefer depilatory creams, which works for both peach fuzz and coarse hairs.
Moreover, the price is not bad at all.
But test how many minutes should be left on the skin. Their instructions are to apply it in a thick layer, leave it on for up to 8 minutes and then remove it.
However, those 8 minutes might be a bit too much.
If you have peach fuzz, start by leaving it on for just 2 minutes and see if the hairs are dissolved in that short time span. Increase the time if the hairs are not removed.
3. Tweezing/Plucking: Tweezerman Mini Slant Tweezer
Tweezing requires a lot of patience as an upper lip hair removal method. For me, it became annoying and time consuming.
But the results last for at least two weeks in my case.
If you have peach fuzz you can even go for a month until it starts showing. That’s a really big advantage.
The second one is that the pain is not bad because with a tweezer you can’t grab that many hairs at once, contrary to what happens when you use a facial epilator or when you wax.
It’s an incredibly cheap upper lip hair removal option. A tweezer is quite cheap and it stays with you for so many years. You only need a lot of patience.
4. Waxing: VidaSleek Hard Wax Kit
The VidaSleek Hard Wax Kit for Face is a perfect upper lip hair removal product if waxing is your choice.
It’s an affordable kit although it’s not exactly the easiest to use.
As an upper lip hair removal product it can take some time getting used to it but that’s pretty much the case with waxing.
An alternative are cold facial wax strips.
The benefits are worth it though.
The hairs are removed from the root, the smooth skin will last for at least 2 weeks, it depends on the rate at which your hairs grow back.
Unlike the above two methods (shaving and hair removal creams), waxing is painful.
But it will take a couple of minutes to be done. You will get used to it very quickly.
As an upper lip hair removal method, the VidaSleek Hard Wax Kit can be considered to be quite affordable, it will last quite a long time.
As it’s mentioned in its name, this is hard wax.
Hard wax is ideal whether we’re talking about facial hair removal or bodily hair removal. It removes almost all the hairs from the root from the first pull.
You can apply a second wax strip or use a pair of tweezers to remove the remaining hairs.
Hard wax is also perfect for sensitive skin. It doesn’t irritate the skin, make sure to always moisturize after each hair removal.
If your skin is extremely sensitive, use an aloe vera gel, besides your usual facial cream.
The VidaSleek Hard Wax Kit for Face is my top recommendation if waxing is how you want to handle your upper lip hair removal.
It can be used to remove hairs from the underarms and bikini area, as well.
The VidaSleek Hard Wax Kit for Face:
- it’s microwavable, you don’t need to buy a warmer
- 3.5 oz microwavable hair removal wax
- heat the wax for 3 minutes, stir to make the melting uniform and then test the consistency – until you get used to the whole process you can practice on legs or arms
- 2 wooden spatulas to apply the wax in strips
- wash the wooden spatulas after each use
- 2 soothing post depilatory wipes included
- you can use baby oil or any other oil to remove the wax residues
- if you only use it for upper lip hair removal, the wax will remain warm and liquid, you won’t need to reheat it
- this is hard wax, which means that you don’t need to use muslin strips to remove it
How do you use hard wax?
- apply the hard wax using a wooden spatula in the direction of hair growth, let it on the skin until it hardens, lift a corner a bit and remove it in the opposite direction of hair growth
- hard wax sticks just to the hairs once it hardens and that’s why it’s the best type of wax, especially for sensitive skin
- it’s also the reason why it’s slightly less painful
- pull off the wax quickly and swiftly, don’t hesitate at all because the pain is not that much
It’s a great kit for coarse hairs as well as thin ones.
5. Epilation: Emjoi Epi Slim+ e18
Epilators are fantastic for any part of your body, whether you want to have silky smooth legs, perfectly hairless underarms, a bikini line ready for the beach or you want a smooth and clean upper lip, even in the brightest light.
Emjoi Epi Slim+ e18 is one of the best epilators for face.
It can also be used as an epilator for the underarms and for the bikini area.
If you want an epilator for the whole body, including for face, I recommend the Braun Silk Epil 7681 or the 7561.
It has a special facial cap and a sensitive area cap.
It works for both coarse hairs and peach fuzz.
Getting back to my personal recommendation,
Let me tell you a few words about the Emjoi Epi Slim e18 and what are the reasons for choosing it if you’ve decided that epilation is the upper lip hair removal method for you.
It has 18 tweezers. These 18 tweezers rotate, grab many hairs at the same time, and remove them from the root.
It’s really fast, the whole hair removal process will only take about 2 minutes.
Since the hairs are removed from the root, it takes longer for them to grow back – between 2 weeks up to a month.
The Emjoi Epi Slim is tiny but powerful.
Thus, coarse hairs are easily removed from the root. It’s also pretty good at removing thin fine hairs.
If you have peach fuzz the best method for you would definitely be threading so you should stop looking for the best upper lip hair removal products and find a threading salon.
It works on 2 AA batteries so that’s the only investment to be made in the many years to come.
It would have been better for it to be rechargeable, especially if you plan on using the Emjoi e18 to remove hairs from the face and the underarms and the bikini area.
A facial epilator turns out to be one of the cheapest upper lip hair removal methods because it can work perfectly well for so many years.
The only problem is that it’s going to be painful in the beginning and you will have to change the batteries pretty often.
6. Laser Hair Removal: Find an Amazing Professional
The follicle is damaged with a beam of light.
It’s painful and it can take from 2 to 6 treatments until completion but each session lasts a few minutes.
You must also understand that the results are not permanent, just like the American Academy of Dermatology Association lets us know.
Some of the hairs can regrow after several months or some can take even years to grow back.
It also doesn’t work for everyone: the perfect candidate is a person with fair skin and dark hair.
Now for the price:
According to HuffPost, each session can cost between $150 up to $250. That’s definitely expensive, not something I could afford.
Finding the right professional is very important when it comes to laser hair removal, just like it is the case with the next and last upper lip hair removal method.
7. Electrolysis: Find an Amazing Professional
An electrologist is the way to go if you plan on undergoing electrolysis sessions.
This is the only permanent upper lip hair removal method!
Be prepared to pay an average price of $600 for all the needed sessions, which might even take a whole year to be completed.
According to the American Electrology Association, electrolysis is suitable for every skin and hair color.
But once that year is over, you’ll never have to search for another hair removal method every again.
My Own Experience with a Bunch of Upper Lip Hair Removal Methods
I’ve tried 3 upper lip hair removal methods and each had its advantages and disadvantages.
Besides my upper lip and my eyebrows, I leave my peach fuzz just as it is and as nature intended it to be.
That is becoming increasingly difficult as time goes by. I’ve just entered my 30s but some peach fuzz is starting to stand out a bit.
I’m too lazy at the moment to do anything about it. I’m so letting laziness win over this.
The same cannot be said about my upper lip hair because that one is definitely dark and has been so since my teenage years.
- My first experience was with a pair of tweezers. That happened when I was in high school.
- I discovered the wonderful world of cold facial wax strips after going a few times to a salon for waxing all over including my upper lip hair and even my eyebrows.
I ended up sticking to cold facial wax strips for many many years because it was such a simple upper lip hair removal method and overall pretty affordable.
It has the same advantages as tweezing with the major bonus that you achieve the same results in 2 minutes.
- I got an epilator with a facial cap and epilation has been my go-to choice for a couple of years now
There was no point in spending money on cold facial wax strips anymore.
At the moment, I alternate between my Braun Silk Epil 9561 and my Braun Silk Epil 7561.
Both are amazing upper lip hair removal products for me.
I like epilation because it’s just easy. And cheap in the long run.
I just attach the facial cap, turn the epilator on speed 1, and in 2 minutes I’m done.
It takes longer to apply all the creams after epilation.
After all these upper lip hair removal products and methods, which one is your favorite?
