Shaving Tip 1: Choosing the Right Razor Can Make All The Difference

One of the most important shaving tips for women and my first on this list is that you need a very good razor.

You can check out my choices for the best razors for women if you need a place to start.

I will also review a very good razor for women here so that I can give you an idea what to look for.

Why am I saying that you need to find the right razor for you?

It simple:

The razor is the one that does all the job. It’s the instrument, it’s the one that cuts the hairs.

I need a good epilator because the epilator is the one that removes the hairs from the root.

It’s the same for every hair removal method whether we’re talking about hair removal creams, waxing, epilation, and so on.

Before technique and other additional tips concerning a hair removal method, we need to talk about the tool that deals with the unwanted hairs.

Regarding a good razor:

  • the better they are, the more close to the skin they will get, without cutting you or creating burns
  • razors that work with refills have 5 blades and they cut the hairs extremely quickly without cutting the skin
  • the refills are pretty expensive and they need to be changed quite often, depending on how often and how much of your body you shave
  • disposable razors, the good ones for women, have 3 blades and they’re quite great, I definitely recommend trying ones like the Gillette Venus Sensitive Women’s Disposable Razors, they’re quite cheap and you get 6 in a pack
  • the strip is a good moisturizer and it ensures that the blades won’t drag on the skin, the razor should glide easily and effortlessly to prevent nicks
  • newer, more innovative razors even have a trimmer attached for longer hairs and the blades now adjust to the body’s contour
  • there’s also the option of choosing an electric razor for women, like the Panasonic ES2207P – it’s affordable, it might not cut the hairs as close to the skin as a mechanical razor but there’s no risk of cuts or razor burns, and you pay for it once and use it for many years to come

I believe that, at the moment, the best razor for women is the Gillette Venus Swirl.

The Gillette Venus Swirl:

  • has 5 blades – they are described as by Gillette as 5 of their thinnest and sharpest blades, you can expect a really close to the skin shave and a fast shaving session, when the blade is really sharp one pass should be enough
  • it works with refills
  • the package also includes 2 refills, which makes the price seem much more acceptable
  • MicroFine comb that guides the hairs to the blade
  • FlexiBall technology, helping the razor to adjust to a body’s contour – great for the shaving the bikini area
  • water-activated strip, a moisture glide serum
  • it’s more suitable for normal skin
  • if you have really sensitive skin, I recommend the Schick Hydro Silk

Shaving Tip 2: Use a Shaving Gel

There’s really no need to get a gel designed especially for women.

If your husband and boyfriend already uses one that works for you, too, there’s no need to buy a separate one.

We might be talking about shaving tips for women but we are not restricted to the products created solely for our gender.

Get any gel, it’s much better than shaving soap.

Get a cheap one, you don’t need to go for the high-end products, unless you want to.

I don’t recommend shaving creams because they might clog the pores and that might lead to razor burns.

I recommend the Gillette Satin Care Ultra Sensitive Shave, 7 oz each.

There are actually 2 shaving gels included in the pack.

And the price is incredibly affordable. I can’t even imagine how long two cans of this shaving gel for women will last.

It’s also dye and fragrance free because it’s especially designed for those with sensitive skin.

It will also leave the skin feeling really smooth afterwards but I still think that you should still use a body lotion or moisturizer afterwards.

Especially on areas that are more predisposed to razors bumps, like the bikini area. But more on that later.

The importance of a shaving gel is non-debatable.

It provides a sliding environment for the blades.

They will cut the hairs in a smooth, quick manner without nicking the skin.

It will work perfectly for men, too. You can share.

Shaving Tip 3. Take a Shower Before and Keep the Skin Wet

Wetshaving simply means shaving on a wet skin.

You need to take a shower, preferably with hot water before and you need to keep your skin wet until all the hairs have been removed.

You don’t need more than 3 minutes under the hot water until you can lather some gel onto the skin and strike the first glide of the razor on the skin.

Warm water will soften the hairs and there will be no discomfort.

Razors might have strips for a smooth glide but nothing compares to the glide created adding shaving gel to the soaked softened hairs.

And the open pores also contribute to preventing burns.

I suggest you do that, unless you want your skin to suffer from side-effects, like redness, irritations, burns, or nicks.

Shaving Tip 4. Exfoliation is Essential

While taking that shower before shaving to soften the hairs, you should also exfoliate.

You can use an exfoliating glove or a body scrub.

Exfoliation is crucial if you don’t want ingrown hairs.

And it helps a lot with razor burns and bumps prevention, too.

It’s an essential shaving tip for women.

Do it before shaving, to remove all the dead skin cells and then you can exfoliate daily or once every 2-3 days, whenever you have the time.

There’s actually the perfect exfoliation product that I want to bring to your attention.

It’s called the Tend Skin Care.

This is a chemical exfoliator that prevents razors bumps and ingrown hairs.

It works by soothing the skin and by removing dead skin cells, which can clog the pores and that can lead to bumps and ingrown hairs.

It can be used on the face as well as on the whole body.

I definitely recommend using it on the bikini area, which can get irritated easily and the regrowing hairs can cause razor bumps as well as uncomfortable itchiness.

Use it after shaving to sooth and calm the skin. It will work in preventing razor bumps.

Wait a few seconds and then apply a moisturizer.

If you suffer from ingrown hairs on legs, it would be beneficial to use the Tend daily.

It’s a very good chemical exfoliator for legs, face, bikini area, back, underarms.

Apply it every night and leave it on the skin to remove the dead skin cells and, in time, the ingrown hairs will come to the surface.

It will dry out the skin.

You can moisturizer a few second after applying it.

It’s a great product to have around and I couldn’t write an article on the best shaving tips for women without mentioning the Tend.

It works for both men and women. Men often rely on it to prevent razor bumps on their face after shaving.

Shaving Tip 5. Shave Against the Direction of Hair Growth

When you use an epilator or you wax, you do it against the direction of the hair growth.

I would say that the same applies to shaving when it comes to shaving legs, underarms and the bikini area.

I am an advocate of shaving against the grain (against the direction in which the hairs are growing) because it creates a really close shave and it leaves you with unbelievable smooth skin.

At least for a day.

In a couple of days, the hairs are already becoming slightly noticeable.

For the underarms, you’re going to glide the razor in multiple directions since the hair doesn’t grow in just one direction, like it happens on the legs.

Men should shave with the grain, in the direction of the hair growth in order to avoid ingrown hairs.

In general,

Women can shave against the grain without any problems, especially if you follow all these shaving tips.

If you have really sensitive skin, shaving with the grain to prevent any irritation.

Shaving Tip 6: Moisturize After Shaving

The shaving gel, especially the above one, leaves the skin feeling really soft.

But I am firm believer in hydrating the skin.

After all,

I moisturizer after each shower because I have really dry skin. But the skin feels amazing.

You should definitely moisturize after each shaving, it will keep the skin soft and the hairs can grow back without any problem.

Now:

For the bikini area, in order to prevent any itchiness and ingrown hairs, you should combine using the Tend skin solution at least once after shaving and then moisturizing the area daily.

It will keep the skin and the growing hairs soft, which should prevent any itchiness and bumps from appearing.

You don’t need an expensive body lotion.

Just a good nourishing cream for the body.

The CeraVe Moisturizing Cream for Normal to Dry Skin, 19 oz is a really good nourishing cream for the body.

It can even be used on the face.

It’s a cream for both the face and body, you don’t see many of those.

And it’s really affordable for what it offers.

It’s non-comedogenic, fragrance-free, oil-free, and paraben-free.

The ingredients are simple but effective and exactly what the skin needs to keep in the moisture throughout the day:

  • 3 essential ceramides
  • hyaluronic acid

It moisturizes and restores the skin’s barrier. You couldn’t ask for more at a better price.

It also has the National Eczema Association Seal of Acceptance.

Shaving Tip 7: Change the Razor or the Cartridge Frequently

It’s my last essential shaving tip for women but definitely a very important one.

This one is very simple:

It’s important for hygiene purposes and for avoiding getting nicks/burns from a dull blade.

Sharp blades glide effortlessly on the skin preventing nicks and burns.

A dull blade will definitely give you at least a couple of cuts.

Getting an electric shaver will solve all that need to change the blades or razor often.

Using good disposable razors is cheaper than using a razor with refills.

Summing it Up

  • Getting the right razor is an essential tip for men and women
  • A shaving gel is really important, much better than soap or cream. It doesn’t have to be expensive but you should definitely get one.
  • Wetshaving is the way to go.
  • Exfoliation is not something you do only when you wax or epilate. It’s crucial for women who shave, too.
  • Shave against the direction in which the hair is growing. Men should do it with the grain.
  • Use a moisturizer immediately after.
  • And change razors/cartridges often – dull blades cause nicks, bumps, burns.

At first glance, it might seem like a lot but these are just a few simple shaving tips for women that make all the difference and they won’t change your routine by much at all.
