Braun Silk-Epil 5280 Review

Pros: Braun Silk-Epil 5280 has 40 tweezers so it’s a powerful affordable epilator and this is its biggest pro. Another advantage is the close-grip technology that facilitates the removal of tinier hairs. It also has plenty of accessories and additions. There’s a lot to like.

Cons: The Silk-Epil 5280 is not cordless but it has a long cord so you still get freedom of movement. Also, don’t expect it to be a perfect epilator but it’s really great, given its price. I don’t think it’s going to remove all hairs from a single pass, two or three passes are necessary, but it should be able to offer you silky smooth skin.

What made me review Braun Silk-Epil 5280? Besides the fact that it’s a popular epilator among buyers but not as popular as its bigger more expensive brother from the Series 7 Braun 7681?

Well, things went something like this.

Braun Silk-Epil 5280: an Epilator Worthy of its Price

Someone asked for my opinion on a certain model, one that I haven’t heard of, at which point I started researching about that epilator.

After some consideration, I decided that an alternative would be better. And I started with probably the most known brand among epilators, Braun.

So I needed a medium-priced epilator from Braun. I’ve already reviewed the Silk-Epil 7681, the best epilator as we’re speaking in my opinion, but its price didn’t match what I wanted.

That’s when I remembered about the Silk-Epil Series 5. The most popular model being Braun Silk-Epil 5280. And it didn’t took me long until I realized that it’s actually a really good epilator for a very convenient price.

It’s in the same price range as Philips Satin Soft 6520 but it has more to offer than the latter. That’s obvious at a quick glance.

An immediate conclusion it’s drawn from this quick comparison: Braun 5280 is really worthy of its price.

However, if you want a cheap epilator instead of a medium priced one, you should check a Series 3 model from Braun: Braun Silk-Epil 3170.

With that in mind, let’s see what it actually offers. Besides the fact that like any other epilator it removes hairs from the root.

Number of Tweezers for Braun Silk-Epil 5280

Braun Silk-Epil 5280 tweezers

For a medium-priced epilator, this model has an impressive number of tweezers. It has 40 tweezers so the Silk-Epil 5280 is a powerful epilator that removes hairs at a pretty fast pace.

Well, don’t imagine that you’re going to remove all the hair from your legs in 10 minutes but it’s still going to go a little faster than with a cheaper epilator.

It has 40 tweezers.

The 40 tweezers come with close-grip technology for achieving an increased efficiency in removing tinier hairs.

Another feature is the SoftLift Tips. It’s a function that lifts flat-lying hairs. It might not sound much but it’s an useful function sometimes.

Accessories

In the accessories department, this model does a really great job.

It has accessories that are usually found in more expensive epilators, like Philips Satin Perfect Deluxe 6576, like a shaver head and a trimmer head.

Unfortunately, there’s only one cap: the efficiency cap. Even so, the efficiency cap would be more than enough for me. My epilators have always had an efficiency cap and it’s an important accessory from my point of view.

Other additions include a washable head for really great hygiene, a cooling glove for soothing the skin after epilation, 2 speeds, and a smartlight for making sure that you’re not leaving any hairs behind. That’s a pretty complete list.

And there’s also the pivoting tweezers head and the massage rollers.

Corded Epilator

Braun Silk-Epil 5280 is not a cordless epilator. It needs to be plugged in for it to function.

That might be a con for some of you ladies but the cord is long so it offers plenty freedom of movement.

Braun Silk-Epil 5280 is Not a Facial Epilator

This is not a facial epilator simply because it doesn’t have a facial cap that reduces the number of tweezers that make contact with the skin.

It can be used to remove hairs from the root from pretty much anywhere, except face. Braun recommends users to only use it to remove hair from legs, bikini line, underarms, and from any other area from the neck down.

Pain Level

The Dual Comfort System is good for making epilation a little more comfortable. It’s not going to make the pain go away but it gives a nice sensation.

Another thing that should help a little is the cooling glove included in the package. Unfortunately, it will only help with what you feel after the hair removal is all done.

I don’t advise you to use the cooling glove before epilating to numb the area because the cold tightens the pores, which in turn might lead to more ingrown hairs. Use it to soothe the skin after epilation.

Other than that, epilation is painful. Epilators remove hairs from the root but Braun Silk-Epil 5280 it’s not more painful than other epilators, making it a really good choice for beginners and for women who have used epilators for years, as well.
